The original States that formed the American Union were 13; its motto, E Pluribus Unum, has 13 letters, the American eagle has 13 feathers in each wing, and when George Washington raised the Republican standard he was saluted with 13 guns. 

Story of Samuel Storey is also amazing how `13' has been good for him. He is a “thirteener”. 

Here is how :

1. He was born on January 13th, 1840 ( the last figures adding upto 13). 

2. He began to earn money at the age of 13 

3. He made his first political speech when he was just 26 (twice 13), and on January 26th (Again twice 13), a speech which was the beginning of his political fortunes. 

4. It was the 13th year after his first essay where he entered the Sunderland Town Council before he was elected as M.P. of the town. 

5. He enjoyed his first wife's companionship for just 13 years and she died on the 26th of a month. 

6. He was for three years Mayor of Sunderland & for 10 years, Chairman of the Durham Country Council, or 13 in all. 

7. He married his second wife when he was 58 (the figures added make 13 ) & in 1898 (which figures added come to twice 13). 

8. She was born on 13th of a month and died on the 13th.

9. He was an active member of the Liberal Party for thrice thirteen years, and left it in order to support Mr. Chamberlain's Tariff Reform crusade in 1903 (which figures add up to 13). 

10. At the Tariff Reform election at Sunderland his successful poll totalled 12,334 which figures added together make 13. 

Thus, Important & fortunate events in his life occurred when he was 13, twice 13, thrice 13, & four times 13. You will thus see that he was very much of a thirteener, and that the number has carried with it for him generally good fortune.
