The Wilson College 173 Years old instiution

The Wilson College, one of the oldest higher education institution in the country was established in 1836. The college is located in the heart of the city of Mumbai facing Arabian sea. Today it has a student strength of 1517 undergraduates and 73 postgraduates and 310 in self-supporting degree programmes. The Wilson College has a record of continuous growth as an educational institution dating back to 1832 (173 years old institution). It was started as Ambrolie School in Girgaum. From a humble beginning of its location as part of an English school in Girgaum, the college moved into a magnificent campus at Chowpatty, Mumbai.

The college was thus established prior to the formation of the University of Bombay and it got affiliated to the latter in 1861, the college was labelled as a constituent college. When any institution has a long history, there is always a temptation to dwell, just “ this little bit more into the past”. But Wilsonites strongly believe that “while their roots are firmly in the past, they can also make leaps into the future.” The college has emerged as one of the reputed multifaceted colleges in Mumbai city attracting students from all over India and from abroad too. Wilson College gave its only P.M.from Bombay Shri.Morarji Desai, and two Bharat Ratna recipients P.V.Kane and D.K.Karve.

Wilson College is one of the few colleges in Mumbai, which offer wide variety of subjects in both the Arts and Science streams, including some new courses like BMM, BMS, Computer Science and Electronics. These courses have good job potential for the students.

To meet the needs of an ever-expanding students community, several extensions were made regular. Today Wilson College boasts of a well-equipped Gymkhana with a pavilion, two boys’ hostels, one girls’ hostel and also its own private chapel.

Along with the wide range of choice for subjects, Wilson College also has different sections like counselling centres, fine arts, nature club, student council, laboratory. The library is feather to the cap with its impressive collection of rare books and journals dating back to the 18th century. The “Wilsonian” the annual college magazine is not only a specimen of the creative genius, which exists in their students but also it is a record of the past as well as the present activities of the college.

Wilson College entered the New Year 2005 with the memories of two grand occasions, which were celebrated.

Firstly, the celebrations of 200th birth anniversary of John Wilson. On the eve of his 200th birth anniversary they introduced a special cover with his name, birth date and his snap. In the following year they would introduce a stamp of his name too. To mark the celebrations in the year 2004, December month was crowded with several programmes like heats, exhibitions, seminars, presentations, and dinners. Every student as well as staff participated to make this event very special and memorable.

• Secondly, The National Assessment and Accreditations council (NAAC) committee visited Wilson College for assessment and accredited Wilson College with “A” grade (institutional score 85 90 %). The committee expressed its satisfaction with the academic achievements, high success rates at examinations and facilities given to the students and staff. The team appreciated the commitment of the college to the academic excellence and the all round development of the student community.

173 years of Wilson College is a long history. Dating back to the phase of two centuries from a small school started at the residence of Dr. Wilson it has grown into a multidiscipline University affiliated college.

Many things have changed in 173 years and the things which remain constant is “The aim and guiding principle remains unchanged to produce morally upright, intellectually well trained, socially conscious and spiritually oriented men and women.”
