An Indian
walks in a bank in New York City and inquires for
the loan facility counter. On meeting the officer,
he tells him that he is going to India on a business
trip, for two weeks and needs to borrow $ 5,000. The
bank officer tells him that the bank will need security
for the loan, so the Indian hands over the keys of
a new Ferrari parked on the street in front of the
bank.
He produces
the title and everything is checked out. The loan
officer agrees to accept the car as collateral for
the loan. The bank's president and its officers all
enjoy a good laugh at the Indian for using a $ 250000
Ferrari as collateral against a $ 5,000 loan.
An employee
of the bank then drives the Ferrari into the bank's
underground garage and parks it there. Two weeks later,
the Indian returns. Repays the $5,000 and the interest,
which comes to $ 35.41 The loan officer said, “Sir,
we appreciate that you gave us an opportunity to serve
you and in future we will always be willing to serve
you, however we are a little puzzled. While you were
away, we checked and found that you are a millionaire”.
What
puzzles us is, why would you bother to borrow $ 5,000?”
The Indian replies:”Where else in New York City can
I park my car for two weeks that too very safely and
only for $ 35.41, and still expect to get it back
when I return. |

•
Use both sides of a sheet of paper. |
|
•
Clip brochures and mailers. Use the unprinted
sides for your messages. |
|
•
Reuse envelopes. Cover old addresses by sticking
a new label. |
|
•
Printout gone? Don't throw away the paper. Flip
it over and use the other side to print out
your rough drafts. |
|
•
Circulate just one document instead of making
copies for different people. |
|
•
Print e-mails only if necessary. |
|
•
If you must take a printout, reduce the font
size so that more matter can fit into fewer
sheets of paper. Here's how : In Microsoft Word,
go to file/Print. At the lower right hand corner,
find the Zoom box. Change the pages per Sheet
selection to 2 of 4 pages. |
|
•
Use thin paper to print. The thicker the paper,
the more you waste. |
|
•
Use handkerchiefs/cloth napkins/cloth towels
instead of tissue paper/paper napkins /paper
towels. |
|
•
Minor corrections on a printed document are
not “untidy”. As long as the document is for
internal circulation, overlook small corrections
and avoid printing out afresh. |
|
•
Contact mail senders to take your company's
name off their mailing list or mark unwanted
first-class mail, “Refused, Return to Sender”. |
|
•
Educate your co-workers and staffers about the
value of saving paper. |
|
•
If you are working in or own a small setup,
try using only recycled paper for all your office
needs. You get distinct stationery. Save used
greeting cards; use them as gift tags. |

•
Don't send greeting cards by mail. Send e-cards. |
