IHCTM Awards Function - World Trade Centre

The Compact Travel and Tourism course has been one of the most popular programmes for the Travel and Tourism aspirants and is being offered since 1971 by IHCTM (Institute of Hotel, Cargo and Tourism Management). One of the most popular segments of the programmes are the workshops organized by IHCTM on “How to Start a Travel Company” and “How to conduct your own package tours,” also known as the Business or Entrepreneurship segment of the course.

This year the Business workshop was out of the ordinary for the existing Compact Travel and Tourism Course at the World Trade Centre, Mumbai. Later in the day IHCTM also felicitated over 150 of its graduates who successfully passed the IATA/UFTAA and IATA/FIATA examinations in September and October 2004.Both the events took place on the 15th of December 2004 at the Centrum Hall at WTC, Mumbai .

The first presentation was on how to go about starting a travel agency and this presentation was made by Subhash Motwani, Director IHCTM and COMPACT TRAVELS where Subhash shared his valuable experience on the future trends of the travel business and how one could go about offering travel services to the clients. The students were enthralled by the presentation and many of them were inspired to work towards become successful entrepreneurs in the field of travel and tourism.

This was followed by a presentation on how to plan tours and start tour packages ranging from a one day trip to Khandala and Lonavala to a overseas holiday to Far East. Elaborate details of cost components, pricing and agent mark ups were provided. For the first time, even travel aspirants who are not students of IHCTM were permitted to attend the presentation and they could very well gauge the professionalism and expertise that form a core aspect of the Compact Travel and Tourism programme offered by IHCTM.

After the tour presentation, there was a surprise in store for the participants. Sanaya Dadachanji, an ex-student and now also a certified IATA instructor cum Tour Consultant at Compact Travels (an associate of RBCS) gave a presentation on how to sell South Africa as a tourist destination. The interactive powerpoint presentation was followed by a very interesting video and a spot quiz and several students took home prizes for having correctly answered the questions. The awarding function came to a close and many students were so inspired by the presentation that quite a few of them were keen to travel themselves and/or sell South Africa to prospective travellers. The morning session was indeed a rewarding function for the participants and this was followed by the awarding function in the latter half of the day.

The IATA programmes are undoubtedly one of the most prestigious qualifications for the airline industry and later in the day, IHCTM organized a Diploma awarding function. The special guest for the evening was Mr Chiku Advani, the Travel Man who has over 4 decades of experience on the travel industry and is now a renowned person in the trade - be it the travel or the airline industry with such a vast experience. Besides being the Managing Director of Travel Spot, Chiku as he is popularly known, has also been the President and Secretary of the Lions Club of Bombay. He has received several awards such as the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation, Bombay Interline Club Award, Air Cargo Club of Bombay Award and the list continues.

He congratulated the students on their achievements and shared his valuable experience and expertise on how one should go about preparing for a career in the airline industry. He also narrated his success story and advised students to strive hard to excel in whatever they pursue. Thereafter he awarded the distinction diploma holders as well as those who successfully passed their IATA/UFTAA and IATA/FIATA examination. Last but not the least, the teachers of IHCTM were felicitated for their sincere efforts on getting exceptional results through their commitment which has now become a trademark of IHCTM. Thus, the students present had an opportunity to applaud for the efforts taken by their professors. As always, this function was memorable in its own way and a resounding success. Students were also informed of exciting career opportunities and openings in store for them in the travel, tourism and cargo industries received by IHCTM as well as the opportunity to get exposure and work as trainees at the International Airport and Air Cargo complex. Once again not only the IHCTM students walked away with the best results but also with the widest range of career openings especially as the travel and cargo industries are on a high with the fast expansion in the field of aviation and tourism.
