Opportunities Today :- March 2005 Issue

Abhishek Shirur

22 years young Abhishek had a burning desire to fly with an Airline as Cabin Crew. So immediately after completing his B Sc he started his pursuit. He needed some expert advice and guidance. He enquired with several friends who recommended him a reputed place IHCTM- professional training organization for national and international qualifications. He visited the corporate office at Colaba and attended a career talk. He was impressed with blunt facts that selection is on merit and not because of joining an institution. Secondly for every single job of cabin crew there are more than 100 candidates. So one should be groomed all round not just “in-flight” training, as “in-flight” training is given by Airlines after selection. One should instead be trained in core skills such as Communication, Customer Care, and Courtesy. Besides one should get sufficient knowledge in Airline operations and itinerary, ticketing, fares, formalities of documentation etc.

While one is waiting for vacancies of cabin crew and selection opportunity one can work in travel industry at a counter or as a ground staff for passenger handling at Airport. Such experience adds lot of mileage and weightage during selection process.

Other strength is study of hospitality industry specially food and beverage service, operation at front office and guest care. This total training can help one to work in hospitality industry also and such experience is special and added advantage for selection of cabin crew job as Airlines serve different meals with varied menus on the aircraft. Guidance on preparing CV and interview techniques enhances one's chances in selection process.

At IHCTM Abhishek got total training through power learning and he is happy to be selected by national carrier after rigorous process of going through first interview, written tests then the final interview. His regular attendance helped him to become fit for final selection. We give him full credit or 100% for his diligence, involvement and efforts while he humbly puts it to his teachers and excellent teaching system of the organisation.

OT wishes him all the best for scaling greatest heights in his career while he is literally flying high in the skies. (OT has given detailed interview of Abhishek to open the eyes of cabin crew aspirants to reality of selection where contacts don't work-only one's merit, scientific training, guidance and grooming does certainly help. OT will offer guidance to all those who want to be rightly and properly informed rather than being carried away by high fly claims!)
