Around Europe in 21 Days

This month Sanaya continues her trip into into Austria - ‘Jewel of the Alps’ and later into Switzerland.

After covering romantic Italy, we entered the Jewel of the Alps - Austria on the ninth day of our tour. Austria joined the European Union in 1995 and encompasses an area of 83,858 sq km, From a very modest existence about 50 years ago, Austria has grown to become one of the wealthiest nations in the EU and the world. Tourism plays a colossal role in shaping the Austrian economy. There are innumerable large beautiful lakes across the country and 47 per cent of the country lies covered with forests and 26 per cent is occupied by grazing lands. Austria continues to remain exceptionally clean and environmentally intact providing just the right ingredients for a rich influx of tourists. About 1.7 million stay overnight per year while the place attracts 6.9 million day visitors all of whom make a beeline for the Höhensalzburg Fortress, Hellbrünn Palace and park and, most importantly, Salzburg -Mozart's birthplace. Salzburg's Old City was declared a `World Heritage Site' by UNESCO! The most famous movie of all times, The Sound of Music was shot at locations in and around Salzburg.

Till date, thousands of film buffs visit this city to follow in the footsteps of the famous film and take the famous Sound of Music tour to live the experience of one of Hollywood's most popular movies.

Before we checked into the hotel in Innsbruck, we were taken for a short city orientation tour covering the 'Zentrum' area (City Centre). The Goldenes Dachl (Golden Roof) is a late gothic bay window with 2657 gilded copper tiles, built to serve as a court box during Emperor Maximilian Ist's reign (1494-96). Frescoes and coats of arms and dancers in relief decorate the bay and the interior of the seat. Just across from the Golden Roof is one of the most magnificent facades of 'Helblinghaus'. On the same street you will find the Innsbruck Crystal Gallery - Situated in the old town of Innsbruck near the Golden Roof, the world's largest Swarovski shop, the Crystal Gallery. The building dates back to the 15th century and looks back over a colourful past as an inn with stables. The interior was extensively expanded and modernized by Swarovski in 2004. On three levels, the world's leading manufacturer of cut crystals presents the latest trends from its multifaceted product range, encompassing crystal objects, decoration, jewellery and fashion.

Precious crystal chandeliers and precision devices from Swarovski Optics round out the extensive offer. Multilingual crystal specialists guarantee an unforgettable shopping experience in a unique setting.

That marked the end of the tour and we checked into the famous privately owned Austrian enterprise representing city hotels with sophisticated standards - the 'Austrotel Hotel'

Visit Sinne (Senses- Discover the Invisible) You dive into an inconceivably vast, black room. From there you will walk for approximately one hour in complete darkness across scented meadows, past the edge of a forest over bridges and through narrow gorges until you reach an idyllic lake nested in the midst of our fabulous mountains. A boat will take you and your family or friends safely to the other shore, to where tiny shops and charming cafés already await your visit. A fascinating journey along which as described at the beginning, you can be sure you won't see anything. Yet by using extraordinary power of your imagination and by intensively applying your other senses, your journey through a total absence of light set in installations of perception will be an impressive, unforgettable experience.

On the tenth day after a good buffet breakfast at the hotel we departed for Swarovski Crystal Worlds - A tour through the Kaleidoscope of senses. The most interesting creations in this Crystal World began right at the Entrance Hall. As soon as one goes into the large, blue entrance hall of the Crystal Worlds, you start to undergo a transformation and perceive the world in new ways. In the half-light you can see sparkling crystal artworks by famous artists such as Salvador Dali, Keith Haring, Andy Warhol, Niki de Saint Phalle and John Brekke. In the center is the Centenar: with 300,000 carats, the largest cut crystal in the world. The route takes you along the 42 meter long, 11 meter high wall, filled with 12 tons of glittering crystals, and into the amazing interior of the giant Crystal Dome. The Crystal Dome is a cupola faceted with 590 mirrors creates a unique illusion for the senses. It conveys the impression of being at the heart of a huge crystal. Beams of light reflect and refract thousands of times to the accompaniment of sounds by Brian Eno. As we move along, we come to the Ice Passage. In this fascinating passage, designed by Studio Azzurro, sounds accompany the visitor's footsteps, which constantly cause the colours and shapes on the floor to change.

Next is the Global Network - A visual representation of the history of the development, the creative world, the philosophy and the worldwide presence of the Swarovski company. The 4-meter high rotating globe designed by Bettelheim and Christen disappears into infinity and to everyone's surprise releases the spirit of crystal. Our final halt is at the Swarovski Crystal World Shop. Top British architect Terence Conran has created a fascinating sparkling world covering an area of 800m and displaying a unique selection of Swarovski products. You will find experienced, multilingual staff, ready to provide you with exclusive service. After being mesmerized by the charm of Crystal you are definitely looking forward to buy some Crystals as a souvenir and one must not miss this opportunity as it is all worth it at the Swarovski Crystal World Shop

After the crystal shopping we went back to the hotel for a buffet lunch. We were scheduled to go to Salzburg for the Sound of Music Tour but due to  unavoidable reasons it was cancelled and instead we went to 'Bergisel' the Olympic Ski Jump Stadium and the view from top of the Olympic Stadium was 'Spectacular'- A bird’s eyeview of the city of Innsbruck- A must see ! Later instead of getting back to the hotel early in the evening, my dad and I decided to go for a walking tour of the Zentrum and its surroundings (on our own) with the help of a city map. We started walking from Höfburg (Imperial Court Palace) walked past the Golden Dach, Helblinghaus as we continued walking we saw the Stadtturm (City Tower) - Built 1442-50 as one of the most unique town hall towers. The pointed roofs were replaced with rounded ones in 1560. Crossing the City tower, we arrived at the Annasaule (St. Anna's Column) which was built between 1704 and 1706 by the provincial legislature in commemoration of the Tyroleans' successful resistance to a Bavarian invasion (1703) during the War of Spanish Succession.

A liitle away from there was the Triumphpforte (Triumphal Arch)- Built in 1765 to commemorate the betrothal of Leopold II, who later became Emperor of Austria. His father, Emperor Franz., died during the celebrations. We continued walking towards Basilika Wilten- A place of pilgrimage since the 14th century. Built in 1755 by Franz de Paula Penz, clergyman and builder of numerous baroque churches in the Tyrol, which has impressive ceiling paintings by Matthaeus Guenther and stucco work by Anton Gigl. From this point we started to walk towards the hotel. It took us approximately 45 minutes to walk back to the hotel from Basilika Wilten. However when we located our hotel we felt triumphant to have found our way back without any help in an unknown country. The disappointment of not seeing Salzburg had now vanished as I had the chance to explore Innsbruck on my own. Alas! The hectic day was over.

On day 11 of the tour after a good buffet breakfast most of us went to the supermarkets - a walking distance from the hotel to buy some potato chips,  mineral water and fruits for the long bus journey to Switzerland. We had an early lunch and then left for Switzerland. Our first stop in Switzerland was at Interlaken. It was a long road journey of 6 hrs and on our way we passed through the longest tunnel in Europe named 'Arlberg' measuring 15.7 kms. After a long day of travel on the bus and an early dinner the group retired to their respective rooms at Hotel Chalet Oberland. The “Chalet-Hotel Oberland” is located right in the heart of Interlaken - the starting point for many well known excursions.

The word Interlaken comes from the word Interlagos which means between the lakes. This Spa Resort lies between Lake Brienzer and Thun which lies just a few miles apart. The world famous town in the heart of Switzerland has a long tradition as a resort popular with visitors from around the world. The no.1 means of transport was the horse drawn carriage still seen in Interlaken every summer. On the water, modern technology arrived at a very early date. As early as 1835 long before the first Swiss railway line was built steam ships on Lake Thun were made to stop at Interlaken. 4 years later the steam ships were also seen on the neighbouring lake Brienzer. You can experience an unforgettable holiday in the remarkable region between the lakes of Thun and Brienz, at the foot of the mighty Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau!

On day 12 of the tour we had packed breakfast as we departed early in the morning for a top notch excursion. The absolute highlight - A trip to the  Jungfraujoch - Top of Europe, at 3454 meters - Europe's highest altitude railway station. The train to Jungfraujoch from Kliene Scheidegg covers the 4500 metres long track in some 50 mins. The railway line was laid in 1893 and more than 200,000 people from all over the world treat themselves to this unforgettable experience every year.

Mountain Excursions in Switzerland

Mount Pilatus
Mount Pilatus (originally 'Mons Pileatus') near Lucerne, was reportedly the burial ground of Potius Pilate who created a dragon (post death) as a guard. Also known as the Hikers Heaven or the Dragon Mountain of Lucerne, the best way to get acquainted with this is to take the 'Golden Round trip'. A day excursion to Mount Pilatus is quite simply an exceptional experience: Travel by nostalgic lake steamer from Lucerne to Alpnachstad and then with the world's steepest cogwheel railway to Pilatus Kulm (7000 ft) and enjoy fabulous views. A spectacular ride by aerial cableway and panorama gondolas takes you down to Kriens for the bus back to Lucerne.

Mount Schilthorn
Also known as James Bond Mountain, Mount Schilthorn became a famous attraction because the movie 'On Her Majesty's Secret Service' was shot here. The way to this mighty mountain is via Interlaken, Murren or Lauterbrünnen Valley. The view from the peak is one of the finest in Switzerland and allows a total 360 degree panorama. Over 200 mountain peaks in a spectacular landscape are revealed. The unimpeded global view stretches from the Titlis along the Bernese Alps to the Mt. Blanc and across the fertile low line plains to the Black Forest.

Aside from its Hollywood fame, Mount Schilthorn is also well known because it features the world's first revolving mountain restaurant called the Piz Gloria. This destination is popular for weekend getaways as it offers exciting convention facilities. Bollywood has also found the perfect locale for shoots amidst the beauty of Mount Schilthorn. Though there is not much to do here apart from the occasional walk down a trail, the peace and quiet of the altitude are refreshing.

Getting to Mount Schilthorn:
Access by private car or bus from Interlaken via Lauterbrünnen and then on to Schilthornbahn car park in Stechelberg. Alternatively, take the Bernese Oberland Bahn (BOB) from Interlaken Ost Station to Lauterbrünnen and change to the post bus for Stechelberg, the valley station of Schilthornbah. There is also a funicular from Lauterbrünnen to Grutschalp where you change to the mountain railway to Murren. A 10 minute walk through this car free resort brings you to the intermediate station of the Schilthornbahn. Finally the comfortable panorama cabins bring you in 30minutes from Stechelberg or less than 20 minutes from Murren to Schilthorn at 2970m and the revolving restaurant 'Piz Gloria' with its breathtaking 360 degree Alpine panorama.

The Jungfraugh Railway Pass is a personal pass, valid for 6 consecutive days. It entitles the holder to unlimited travel on the route network of the  Jungfraugh Railways. The Jungfraugh Railway Pass is on sale from 1st May to 31st October, from your hotel or local travel agencies, tourist offices or stations of Jungfraugh Railways. Normal price for adults is around 165 Swiss Francs.

For nearly 90 years, Jungfraujoch has enjoyed international acclaim as the highest railway station in Europe. But it has much more to offer than the coming and going of trains. For this is a wonder world of eternal snow and ice. A remarkable range of natural and man made attractions is on offer on the 'Top of Europe'. And the destination has been carefully developed down the decades with protection of the environment very much in mind. The route from the Kleine Scheidegg covers 12 kilometers, almost all of it through the tunnel hewn out of the Alpine rock. Stops are made at the Eiger North Wall, Eiger glacier and sea of ice stations, where huge observation windows offer breathtaking vistas of the valleys below.

The Jungfraujoch itself is an enchanting glacier and grotto world. Visitors are offered fine views of the Aletsch Glacier, at 24 kms the longest ice stream in the Alps. On clear days you can even see beyond Switzerland's frontiers to France's Vosges mountain range and the Black Forest in Germany. A particularly popular attractions is the Ice Palace, created in 1930s by local mountain guides. Located 20 metres under the Aletsch Glacier, it displays superb sculptures of wildlife and other impressive exhibits, carved out of natural ice. Another must for the visitors is husky sledge riding across the frozen wastes- just one of the several attractions for the active vacation visitor.

The first dogs were brought here nearly a century ago to help transport provisions and mail, and the Jungfraugh railway has operated its own breeding centre ever since. The most ambitious project of recent times has been the Sphinx Observation Building, which opened in 1996 after 3 years construction work under the most extreme climatic conditions. The glass and steel structure-which costs nearly CHF30 million to build- provides a 360 degree Alpine panaroma of breath taking beauty. The project was drawn up in close consultation with local environmentalists. Other man made attractions include several restaurants, conference rooms, a souvenir shop and even a post office- the highest in Europe. The trip to the 'Top of Europe is spectacular but safe, and daily train services operate throughout the year. More than half a million passengers visit the Jungfraujoch annually. And for me it was one of the most memorable highlight of the tour of Europe.

Around 20 kilometres from Interlaken, we next visited the Trümmelbach Falls which is a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site. This spectacular place has 10 glacier waterfalls inside the mountain made accessible by tunnel lift and it is also illuminated. The Trümmelbach alone drains the mighty glacier defiles of Eiger (3970m), Monch (4099m) and Jungfrau (4158). Its drainage area is 24 sq km.- half of it is covered by snow and glaciers. Trümmelbach is the only glacier waterfalls in Europe inside a mountain and remains accessible. We returned to the hotel and relaxed until time for dinner. After dinner we went walking on the streets of Interlaken.

It had a very romantic atmosphere with light music and candle lit dinners, a big lush green park with benches all around it for people to rest and we admired the snow clad mountain ranges at a distance. There was lots more to see in Switzerland and to know more about our Swiss experience you will have to wait until the next issue of Opportunities Today.
