With eyeshadow colours running the gamut from glorious shades to subdued neutral hues, the power to play your eyes up to either add that extra sparkle or suggest a hint of excitement now lies in your hands. With today's amazing range of eyshadow colours, the number of exotic combinations you can accomplish is endless. However, choosing the right eyeshadow colours to compliment your skin tone, eye-colour, mood and occasion requires some special skills while proper eye makeup application needs hours of practice.

Making your Eye Makeup Longer-Lasting
Before you start experimenting with your palette of colours, it is important to know how to take proper care of your eye makeup so that you can make them last longer. Eyeshadows are not as durable as we would like them to be and drastic temperature changes will in time affect either their quality or colour intensity. So follow these tips:

Protect your eyeshadows from direct exposure to the sun as - eyeshadows contain colouring agents which are extremely sensitive to the ultra-violet and visible radiation. Always make sure that you don't leave them near open windows or lying open on your car-seat. Highly humid environment affects powder-based and cream-based eyeshadows.

The dampness can cause them to crumble. In addition, the moist environment provides just the perfect atmosphere for moulds and fungus to grow. Always handle makeup with clean hands. Make it a point to wash your eyeshadow brushes regularly with tepid water and ensure that they are thoroughly dried before storage.

Eye-Tricks
Putting colour on your eye lids is more than just adding a splash of mauve here and a dash of apricot there. Remember that eyeshadows are not meant to overshadow. In order to call attention towards your eyes, they should be applied in such a way that the uniqueness of your eyes is highlighted. Eyeshadows come in powders, creams, liquids and crayons. Though powder eyeshadows are easiest to control, they tend to accentuate crepiness on dry, ageing skin. Due to our body heat, the oil and other ingredients present in the cream eyeshadows tend to melt and collect in the creases of the eye.

When using crayons, be sure not to stretch the skin around the eye area and buy only those that spread easily. There's no need to go pale when it comes to colour-mixing. Here are some simple factors to consider which may be of some help when it comes to choosing the right eye colours to give yourself a more coordinated, beautifully balanced look.

Choose Eyeshadow Colours that Match your Clothes
The colour of your clothes is your best bet towards choosing the colour of your eyeshadows. Brown clothes go with the coppers and the rusts plus some other colours such as pale yellow to add that extra impact. If you are wearing a multi-coloured dress, then you can pick any one colour as the basic. For some interesting details, go for a touch of some other complementary shades. If you don't possess a complete range of eye colurs to match every outfit in the cupboard (like the majority of us), just stick to neutral shades that flatter your looks, such as mauve, browns, greys, light pinks.

Use Eyeshadow to Shape your Eyes
If you are born with less than perfect eye shape, there's still a lot you can do to turn them into your most memorable features. Eyeshadows can bring out or recess certain eye areas. A light shadow brings out an area, a dark shadow makes it recede. Each eye needs to be treated individually , but there are some basic guidelines to help you shape your eyes up to create the impression you desire.

If you are Born with Small Eyes:
Open them up with a brush of pastel on the lids and carefully add a darker shade along the socket line. Highlighting on the centre of the brow bone will furthur give you that eye-opening effect.

Case of Prominent Eyes :
Close them with a dark matte colour on the eyelids, pulling the colour along towards the eye socket. Avoid shiny shadows as they will only make the eyes look bigger.

Go with your Lips and Cheeks
Applying too many colours, in different intensities and in odd combinations can give you an `overly-cluttered' look. It is important therefore to learn to harmonize colours so as to achieve a totally balanced overall appearance. Take special care when you are working with eyeshadows in the peach and pink ranges. For a harmonious effect, wear pink shades with cool cheeks and lips and peach ones with warm cheeks and lips.

The best way to master the art is to start applying eye makeup !
