The development and shaping of personality starts from childhood itself. The behavior and influence of parents, the teachers and the society at large shapes the pattern of behaviour of the growing child. Wordsworth has said rightly that The child is the father of man. The childhood fears and traumatic incidents cast their shadows on adulthood. Often some rigidly repressed childhood experience is the basis of adult fear or unhappiness.
Personality is not built in a day. There are certain problems which affect our personality development to the extent that we have diminishing growth.
Emotional problems are the problems which are strong enemies of a good personality. They can occur at any time in one's life and are the greatest destroyers of a pleasing personality. These problems impair our ability to function as a well integrated personality.

Our personality is made up of many things. A part of it is inherited--It comes from parents, grand-parents, and even more distant relatives. It is also framed from our daily experiences. Some part of it comes from our morals, ideals, ethical standards and values that we have acquired from our environment and society. Our personality is mostly of our creation. Nobody can change us except we ourselves. The decision is ours and the result also will be enjoyed by us.

The following are the 4 E's that affect the creation of our personality:
Experience
Exposure
Education
Environment
Experience: It is made up of past and present experience. Much of our success in the present depends upon what we have learnt in the past.
Exposure: Exposure to other people and other's ideas affects our self. If our mind is not fed by exposing it to new concepts, it will become sluggish. The more active our mind is, the more active will be our personality. The active personality is happy and likeable.
Education: It is a process by which we exercise and develop the powers of the mind. It helps us to gain knowledge in various fields and up-date the information.
Environment: We cannot control our childhood environment but we can surely control adult environment and we should do it if we find that a better personality will emerge from the change. We should seek the atmosphere and the surroundings which call forth the best in us. The environment we fashion out of thoughts, our beliefs, our ideals, our philosophy, is the only one we will live in, with hope and
satisfaction. To sum up everyone has a personality, but to make it pleasing and better, it is important to take initiative. So let each of us take our first step to a new better and brighter personality to help ourselves become achievers as well as contributors to welfare of self, society and mankind. |
