Hair Stylist and You

Needless to say, most of you are already aware of the importance of a good haircut to achieve the eventual hairstyle you desire. Hair has the power to make or break your overall look. A good haircut is thus absolutely necessary for the look you want.

After much trials and errors, you should be able to know if your face is made for the latest hairdo. If you do not, the hairstylist plays a vital role in this decision-making process. A professional hairstylist should have the expertise to bring out a hidden forehead or open up deep-set eyes. But, considering the fact that the choice of a suitable hairstylist is in itself, a difficult decision to make, do choose with care. How you select your stylist depends very much on yourself. If you are to go for the latest in hairdos, dressing and accessories, your hair has become very much an adornment to you. It is part-and-parcel of your overall appearance and this, in itself will be a determining factor as to which stylist you should choose to cut your hair. If you are the `trendy' type, pick a stylist who is innovative and familiar with the latest trends. If you are amongst those who are satisfied with a comfortable style that brings you through from work to social functions, year in and year out, you are one that goes for a style that suits your personality.

Most people expect good services from their stylist's right from the time they step into the salon and be seated into the most comfortable corner. And all they divulge was as `I want my hair trimmed' and expect miracles to be done.Open yourself to your stylist, giving the details of your likes and dislikes. If you have a passion for long hair, let him know and let him be the judge. It would not earn you anything by keeping quiet. Being so uncommunicative, do not blame your stylist when your five year old beloved tresses are snipped off your shoulders.

Impart as much information as you can about your hair. It will go a long way in getting what you desire in the end. Talk about your work and what you want from your hair. Let your stylist know about the kind of job you are in and the amount of time you have at hand. If you are a public relations officer, an executive and you need a chic hairdo for the whole day, it would be just right for you. If you hardly have the time for even a quick bite, an elaborate hairdo that calls for tedious maintenance is out. Let your stylist know, it is more likely that your hairdo is one that is practical as well as attractive, and to your taste. Voice your objections from the beginning. Do not just sit there, feeling angry and moody with the way your hair is being done, raising no objections until the end of the session. It is just too late to do anything then.

The search for the right stylist can be fairly frustrating, time consuming and pretty expensive. Hairstyles are given much publicity so much so that stars are created overnight just because of their high fashion hairdos! Farah Fawcett won a large following of fans partly because of her infamous locks that had created such a sensation in the '70s that a shampoo was even named after her.

Do not move from one stylist to another. A hairstylist who has been with you for the last few years knows you better to give you the style that you want. Every new stylist you turn to means a new page in your hairstyling history. There is nothing to gain to flit from one stylist to another. We are not advocating that you spend your money lavishly, but, since having a haircut or perm is not a monthly affair, treat yourself to some royal treatment at better equipped salons. This is not to say that your favourite salon at the market is not. But, if you do not have a good stylist that understands you or to give you the style that you want, it is always wise to patronize a more popular hair salon in town.

These are the places that attract talented and professional stylists. Anyone can take up a pair of scissors to give a haircut, it is quite another to cut it to frame a particular face and emphasize its good features. A bit more money does pay for that long-desired look. For the first trial, invest a little bit more. Go to the best salon first. Your favourite salon may be able to catch up with the cut later on. It serves no purpose going from one small salon to another and yet finding that you do not get what you want.

Another way to search for a good stylist is by referrals. A good haircut on a colleague or friend does imply that the stylist has a certain professional standard. Ask her where she had her hair done. The next time she goes there, make it a point to follow. Simply sit and watch how the stylist works. Strike up a conversation with the stylist to see if you can reach a common understanding with him. If not, you will know that he is not the stylist for you.

A good haircut always looks good even when wet. If your hair looks good only after much styling and blowing, you will be in for a shock when you emerge from the shower and find that you cannot restore it to its `glamorous' shape. Given the fact that we are not professionals, we are not so at ease with the dryer and with the hair drying technique that a stylist employs, it is quite impossible to bring back that wonderful look the following day. Ask your stylist as to how best you should do and practice. Find out more about the stylist to see if he attends hair seminars or takes up classes to keep up with what is the latest. This is very important as it reflects on how dedicated and how much interest he has in his job and whether he is really serious about it.

Professional hairstylists do like new ideas, and when you bring in a picture of how you want your hair to look like, it is something for them to work upon. On the other hand, do not think that they want to go ahead with a style that is contrary to what you want. They also want their customers to walk away proudly and happily. Unless it is a request that is quite impossible and which the stylist finds not suitable on you, most stylist would still comply with what you want, but, with moderations here and there.

Inspite of what has been discussed, do not be over-jumpy whenever the stylist takes up a strand of your hair. It can be really taxing for the hairdresser and it is definitely a time for you to let your hair down.
