Most of the
young people aspire for salaried or wage paid jobs because of
misplaced, and often exaggerated keenness for security, fixed
income and retirement benefit. Not many strive for
self-employment which often offers greater rewards. Every year
the number of students at the crossroads of life on completion
of education has been increasing. Unemployment among educated
youth has been increasing with the same rapidity as the
expansion of educational facilities. |

It is
not always necessary to look for a paid job as a means
of subsistence. Development of industries has opened
up numerous opportunities for self employment, and
these are within the reach of all types of job
seekers. Our youth should change their attitude
towards work and exploit the opportunities, instead of
aimless pursuit for Government jobs, public sector
establishments or corporates. |

A self
employed person is the master of his own show-his own
employer and boss. He can regulate the sequence of his
activities and plan his work as he deems fit. All that
you have to possess are temperamental and personal
qualities, aptitude and willingness to work. Young
persons with presentable personality and
conversational ability will find numerous avenues of
employment as tour consultants, customer relation
executives, sales representatives, distributors,
telemarketing executive, financial/ insurance
advisors, suppliers, etc. Those who possess poise,
energy, determination and capacity for hard work, in
the face of keen competition, ultimately do succeed:
and once successful, their career is ever lasting. |

Insurance Work : Insurance is of many types life,
fire, marine, accident, theft etc. Most insurance
agents work on commission basis, as paid employment is
not encouraged. An ambitious young man can multiply
this by his efforts. In fact most active agents have
an average monthly income of 10 to 25 thousand rupees
and many earn much more than that. So, insurance
agents work on commission basis. Insurance work does
not require any high academic qualifications, although
a well-educated person generally has better chances of
success. With ambition and determination, you can
start earning handsome income and grow rapidly.
Besides being your own master, you have ample liberty
to decide your own routine and method of work.
Nowadays Indians as well as multinational companies
have started training programmes which are leading to
certification. |

Others ‘Sales’ Workers : There are other types of
salesmen-all of them are self-employed, engaged on
selling their services to clients, such as Direct
Marketing Executives. |

Estate Brokers :
House Brokers, Property Dealers Agents, Valuers and
Appraisers, Investment advisors / agents. These
occupations generally do not require any professional
education or training but, only on-the-job experience to
learn the working practices of the trade. Many join as
employees, assistants or apprentices to established
persons, or work with their own relations; and after
gaining experience set up their own office. |

Professional Free-lancing : Free-Lancing involves
pursuit of a profession or an occupation usually in
the art, independently without any long-term or
contractual commitments to any person, company, group
or employer. A free-lancer works from his own
residence, studio or office; contacts his clients,
when necessary; and is paid by the job performed by
him. Naturally the number and importance of the jobs
secured by him would depend on the reputation he
builds up.
Thus a writer may write stories, articles, books, etc,
independently for the open market, without any
long-term commitments to any publisher or periodical.
A journalist may contribute articles to different
magazines. An artist may design illustrations, book
jackets, posters and pamphlets for various publishing
and printing houses, departments and establishments. A
web content provider may write for various portals or
sites. |

Earning money at home
The house-keeping duties may not allow most women the
freedom of time for practice or free lancing. Why not
start earning money at home?
If you are qualified for teaching, you may start your
own nursery school / coaching classes in your own
home. Similarly, a musician, dancer or singer may
start teaching classes in her own residence.
Enterprising young girls can open (in metropolitan
towns) boutiques; by engaging a few tailors, to
designing ladies' and children's garments and
undergarments and run a trade in their own houses.

Beautician is a profession in great demand and yields
good income too. All one needs is aptitude and
interest and good training in a reputed institute.
Textile/garments / furniture designers and
textile/fabrics/saris printers (batik, hand painting
and printing, etc.) can similarly engage a few skilled
workers, design and manufacture furniture, fabrics,
costume jewellery and accessories, embroidery and
print textiles/saris/ clothes. With the liberalization
of bank credit facilities, finance should not pose a
difficulty - all that you require are your
resourcefulness, ingenuity and willingness to work
hard . |

Keeping in mind several
opportunities as above, aspirants of any age - whether
collegians, housewives, even those who are retired but
not tired, should take initiative and be their own boss,
right from own home and run their own enterprise. |
