Eyebrows Shape Them Up, Make Them Up

Every beauty expert agrees on the importance of eyebrows to the overall balance of the face. An eyebrow does the same thing for the eye as a frame does for a picture-it completes the eyes, finishes the look. You may already know how to apply the latest or the most complimentary eye makeup but all the knowledge and expertise can go to waste if your brows are a mess. Nothing can spoil a finished makeup more than brow-beaten looks.

As eyebrows affect the total look, they should therefore be worked on before applying eye shadow. Eyebrows growing towards the lid serve only to make the eye look smaller, so do shape them up. The objective, as with all makeup, is to improve your own natural features, so do not attempt to give your brows a completely new shape. Just define and clean-up straggling hairs.

How to Shape Your Brows
On most women, one eyebrow has a “better” shape than the other - a more natural arc or a smoother line. Decide which of your eyebrows is better and use it as a guide for shaping the other one. The natural shape you want can be achieved either by using an eyebrow pencil, tweezing or waxing. Never shave your eyebrow.

To create full and natural brows that frame the eyes without overpowering them, use a fine-point eyebrow pencil with a soft lead in a colour that match your natural eyebrow colour or hair colouring perfectly. The colour of your eyebrow pencil should never be darker than that of your brows or hair colour, unless you have very light-coloured hair. Follow the pencil pointed trick to learn where to draw the browline.

1. Hold your eyebrow pencil upright so that it intersects the inner corner of your eye in a straight line; this is where your eyebrows should begin. If yours fall short of this line, “pencil in” a few hairs. Thread hairs that grow outside this line.

2. Next, hold the pencil at an angle so it touches the outer edge of your nostril and intersect with the outer corner of your eye; this is where your brow should end. Fill brows in with the eyebrow pencil if they don't reach, or “feather in” a few hairs if they are missing. Brows should frame the entire shadowed area.

3. Then hold a pencil parallel to your eye across the bridge of your nose so the inner and outer ends of your brows intersect. Your eyebrows should end at the level at where it begins, or it may be slightly higher than the beginning of your brow. Your eyebrows' ends should never droop below the inner ones.

4. Now, hold your pencil upright, intersecting with the outer edge of the iris of your eye and the middle of your eyebrow. This is the point at which the brow should arch the highest. Brows can arch as much as you like so long as the curve is round. Just make sure you do not flatten it. To emphasize the brow's curve, use short, angled strokes of the eyebrow pencil. The end of your eyebrow, above the outer corner of your eye , should never be higher than this arch, and the ends of both brows should be on an even level.

5. To apply the eyebrow pencil, begin by brushing your eyebrows with an eyebrow brush, using quick, upward strokes to remove excess foundation or face powder. Brushing the hairs up also allows you to see their natural colour and shape. Then with outward brush strokes, smooth the hairs in the direction in which they grow.

6. To shape your brows properly, begin by using short, light strokes of the pencil to outline the top of each eyebrow up to its arch. Use feather-like strokes to extend each brow to the end. Fill in any sparse areas by using these strokes, as though drawing on individual brows hairs. Always brush your brows with an eyebrow brush after makeup to smooth them and blend in the penciled strokes.

7. Using an eyebrow pencil
is more difficult than eyeshadows. If too much pressure is applied, you will create a hard line which will look false. The ‘trick’ is to hold the pencil between your thumb and first finger, very close to its unsharpened end so that it is held in a straight line which could continue up to the ceiling. In this way, you will find it impossible to put any pressure and it is easier to achieve a softer effect.

Face-changing Tips
Threading or Plucking your eyebrows is not only a super way to frame and enhance your eyes but also minimize their drawbacks. If you have wide-set eyes, begin your eyebrows closer to your nose, arch them closer to the point directly over the pupils and end them just before the outer edges of your eyes. This trick has the effect of making wide-set eyes look closer together. To make close-set eyes look farther apart, begin brows beyond the inner corners, arch them a little further out of the point above the irises and end them slightly over the outer corners of the eyes.
