Austria Celebrates 2006 as the Mozart Year

The year 2006 marks the 250th Birth Anniversary of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, the best known Austrian of all time. Famous for his innumerable compositions, the musical genius was feted as an international star in the 18th century. His first music composition was at the age of 5 and Austria will commemorate his 250th Anniversary by lining up exciting events with the biggest celebrations starting in Mozart's hometown Salzburg.

He composed more than 350 of his most riveting works in Salzburg and it was in Salzburg that the foundation was laid for a unique career which made Mozart what he has undisputedly been to this very day - the world's most important and perhaps most often played composer whose music opened a new chapter in music history.Mozart and Salzburg, his hometown Salzburg and Mozart are synonymous. Even if Mozart's music has fascinated and conquered countries around the world, no other city has closer ties to the ingenious composer than Salzburg. After 25 years in Salzburg Mozart moved to Vienna, where his career reached new heights, especially in the field of opera. Unfortunately, he only lived for 10 years in Vienna till his death at the young age of 35.

Mozart locations in Salzburg
Mozart fans from around the world will come to Salzburg in 2006 to celebrate Mozart's birthday together with the Salzburg residents. Many references to Mozart, his work and his family can be found in Salzburg:

The International Mozarteum Foundation, founded in 1880 preserves Mozart's legacy and maintains the main Mozart locations. It maintains the world's largest Mozart library featuring a remarkable collection of Mozart autographs besides managing and operating the Mozart museums in Mozart's Birthplace and Mozart's Residence and preserves the Mozart Memorial in St. Gilgen. Since 1956 it has organized the "Mozart Week" festival at Mozart's Birthplace featuring high-caliber concerts and opera performances.

Two Mozart monuments, one on Mozart Square and one on the Kapuzinerberg, integrate Mozart in the cityscape. Traces of Mozart can also be found in the archiepiscopal Residenz or in the Auditorium of the Old University where as a child, Mozart had his first public performance in a play in the Auditorium and this was where his first music-theatrical piece "Apollo and Hyacinth. was originally staged.

Here are some of the highlights of how the Mozart Year will be celebrated.
The first celebration will be held in Salzburg between January 27 and January 29, 2006
At the beginning of the Mozart Year, as an international starting signal for a year filled with celebrations, Salzburg will host a city fest under the motto: "All the city's a stage.. Music, dance and readings will be available in all of the city's concert halls as well as on the squares and in the courtyards: a fest for Salzburg's residents and its international guests. To underline the country-fair atmosphere children and teenagers will be admitted to many events free of charge. Various (Mozart) institutions will hold an "Open House" to ring in the Mozart Year.

All of Mozart's operas at the Salzburg Festival July 21 to August 31
The Salzburg Festival will have a special focus during the 2006 Mozart Year. For the first time, his music-theatrical oeuvre (22 operas, musical comedies, and other music-theatrical works) will be played in a period of only six weeks! This is a major challenge, both artistically and organizationally. Own productions of Mozart's seven great operas will be presented. The other works will be presented in co-productions or guest performances. In addition to the Festival Halls, the venues will include the Landestheater, the Residenzhof, the Great Auditorium of the University and the Collegiate Church (another authentic performance venue)

The Small Festival Hall will reopen on July 23 as a “House for Mozart”. The “Marriage of Figaro” will be performed on the day of the opening. For more details log on to www.salzburgfestival.at OR you can book your concerts with COMPACT TRAVELS whilst planning your visit to Austria in 2006.
