Drudgery for luxury ?!

The new millennium has ushered a new era of technology, gadgets, comforts, brands, foods and fads. Gone are the days of “Simple Simon”. We are surrounded by Malls and Multiplexes offering shopping bonanza, fast food and movie magic.

This new appealing and attractive environment makes our generation inclined to extravagance in buying brands and being seen in discos and posh restaurants with hordes of friends. The poor can only watch from distance and envy. The rich have to just throw away money lavishly from the unlimited moolah. The tragedy strikes the middle class population. They cannot come down to the level of “just watch and envy”. They can afford this lavish life only when they make big bucks. So they look out for making money at any cost to spend and “feel” rich.

To make big money new opportunities are through “call-centre-like jobs”. Even an HSC passed person is inducted, instructed and starts with 6 to 8 grands going upto 16 and even 20. The odd duty hours takes its own toll. Health is the first casualty. To get over the monotony or boredom unlimited food or coffee breaks only add to odds of further deteriorating. The contacts with family are scanty if any. To have a sense of achievement one starts with lavish spending. Credit cards add to convenience of over looking the price and even keeping track of one's capacity.

The major damage arises from following an erratic life style instead of a balanced and regulated life pattern. The warmth of being with family is missing. One looks for any company anywhere landing oneself in “living to earn” syndrome instead of “earning to live”. The drudgery is the price one pays for so-called luxury one finds in this looney way of life. The irregular life style not only disrupts one's biological clock but disturbs one's self-development and career advancement plan.

The solution to lead a normal life comes from self. The first step is to cut down one's wants created due to imitating the so-called trendy or stylish people. Next start with a suitable career plan. Ideally the planning should be pursued alongwith one's graduation so that by the time one is through with graduation a vocational qualification as well as experience through vacation jobs gives one an advantage and edge in the career world. Even international qualifications can be easily pursued in our own country at an affordable cost.

One must therefore think “out of the box” beyond 6 traditional careers viz Doctor, Engineer, CA, MBA, Law or IT. There are many easier simpler, faster and affordable vocational careers. All one needs is little search, survey, advice and guidance. A word of warning - be wary of sweet glibe talks at mushrooming mercenary institutions with no credibility or merit to their credit. Finally avoid “luxury” to save from drudgery, achieve success legitimately. All good things take some time!! Rome was not built in a day so be sensible, slow and steady and win the race without pushing yourself in the drudgery for luxury.
