• The first two
broadcasting stations were inaugurated at Bombay and
Calcutta on 23rd July 1927. |

• In June 1936 All India
Radio replaced the earlier name of Indian State
Broadcasting Service. The real broadcasting in India
came with World War II. |
• After independence there
were only six stations in AIR network - Delhi, Bombay,
Calcutta, Madras, Lucknow & Tiruchi with a total of 18
transmitters - 6 on MW & the rest on SW. (MW = medium
wave and SW = Short Wave)
• In 1947, Akashvani ( All
India Radio) covered 2.5% area & 10% population of the
country.
• Akashvani reaches 54
countries. The programmes are now broadcast in 16
foreign languages besides exclusive channels in Urdu &
English. |

• Vividh Bharati Service was
exclusively the commercial channel of All India Radio.
Later on commercials were introduced on the primary
channels & FM stations also. |

• Akashvani is the biggest
of the media units in the country. |
