Whenever someone asks, ”How are you?” the answer
generally is “good!” Well we can still improve upon it
and say ”Great”! Great reflects a higher degree of
happiness, joy and satisfaction of being in command of
activities, situations and circumstances, or having
the confidence and capability of being so.
Now how do we achieve this state of feeling not only
good, but great!?! Let's see the average state of
affairs. Invariably we find things going wrong causing
irritation and annoyance to ourselves as well as those
around us. Even our utterances fail to bring
desireable response. In fact we have sometimes to eat
our words and say, ”I did not mean it!” or “It
happened unknowingly” or even “I was caught unaware”.
The question arises why things happen unknowingly -
The answer to this is in most cases, we are caught
unawares. The key cause to every lapse, small or big
is being unaware.
Unawareness is a state of mind when things seem to
happen involuntarily i.e. without our knowledge. How
can it be so? We all know about our conscious mind
which guides or regulates our activities. We have also
heard of subconscious mind which captures words, ideas
and events which we have come across. It is the
subconscious mind that sets the trend of your
thinking, behaviour and attitude . This level of mind
works as per data stored and responses generated which
are recorded. So this part of mind is “programmable”. |

Besides conscious and subconscious mind, there is a
third aspect viz “reflexes” which are responses that
come spontaneously leaving us unaware. It is this
aspect of our actions that puts us off guard and we
are unaware till we awaken to the damage done. What is
the way out? Well it's simpler than the problem. Since
“reflexes” lead to spontaneous responses leaving us
unaware. Let's control them through “awareness”. This
is a higher state of mind which is lying dormant.
Through practice of putting it to use, it can be
activated and we are mindfully in command instead of
being caught with unmindful reactions or behaviour
making us feel helpless. This “awareness” is the
greatest tool for a great life which while living we
kept aside and allowed our reflexes or habitual
responses to take over.To awaken this awareness is
easy. Everyday once or even more often sit quietly
with closed eyes and listen to some uniform sound for
couple of minutes. Then open your eyes and look around
to observe as many items as possible. Try to notice a
few more. In yogic process, there is “meditation'
which not only enhances awareness but also helps
serenity in life. So start a great life by using the
greatest tool and getting rid of your anger, tantrums,
upsets, annoyances, mistakes and sour relations.
