Campus Round Up

St. Xavier's College

Ratan Tata, Shobha De, Vidya Balan, Kavita Krishnamurthi, Alyque Padamsee, Cyrus Broacha, Spenta R Wadia, Lloyd Mathias……
Guess what's common amongst all of them……

Think……

You might not have known this, all of these successful people are the brand ambassadors of the great experience called “St. Xavier's College”. Yes, this time in campus roundup, we take a sneak-peak into one of the most reputed colleges of India - ST. XAVIER'S COLLEGE.

'Not just a college, It's a way of life’ reads the college logo. And indeed all Xavierites would agree to it. It definitely stands apart from all the other colleges in the town.
The college might be well known for its notorious students and all sorts of unacceptable behaviors. But a first hand account of the college reveals the inclination of the college towards social service and humanity. This aspect of the college revealing its social work inclination may distort your earlier perception about the college. But that's the reality. Engaging in social work activities is very much a part of Xaviers.

One of the college activities that could give you a fair idea of the social activities of the college is “project care”. This is a 2 day event in which Xavierites 'adopt' a street child and outings and games are organized to make sure that each kid can put aside his or her worries for the day and have fun and get the love of a 'didi' or 'bhaiyya'. A handful of students breaking the law is magnified by the media, but the commendable social work done by most of its college students, is left unnoticed by the large masses.

St. Xavier's College has one of the best teaching faculty and good infrastructure with a historical heritage look. The teaching staff at Xaviers takes the extra effort to conduct workshops, seminars, guest lectures, field trips, etc from time to time. Professors believe that this ensures the practical applicability of the concepts learnt.

Admissions to such a reputed institute is purely on the basis of merit. In fact it wouldn't be an over statement to say that St. Xavier's college is one of the few colleges in town to offer admissions without accepting donations.

In 2007, the college has been accredited A+ by NAAC. The college has been the leading college for arts stream. Apart from arts, the college also offers Science, Commerce, BMS and BMM courses. It is well-known for its high cut-off percentages for admissions.

The college has many institutes, departments, associations and facilities. Research institutes within the campus include The Heras Institute of Indian History & Culture, The Cultural Instrumentation Centre for Biological Sciences, etc. The college provides some unique facilities to its students - the multi-media room and Smith Centre for audio-visual instruction.

Apart from the regular curriculum, St. Xavier's College has some special programmes like Honors’ programme, social involvement programme and learning for life programme. There are various student associations within the campus like Students Council, Malhar, Social Service League and AICUF. The college publishes its annual magazine & various other departmental magazines.

St. Xavier's College is, therefore, one of the most sought after colleges. But since the cut-off percentage is too high, even if you don't make it to the college, don't get disheartened. Remember that there are various other institutes available in the career world today.
