Independence is freedom from being dependent, it is
also license to liberty. It gives one right to do as
one likes and what one chooses. In novels and movies,
James Bond is agent 007 which gives him license to
kill. He uses the license or liberty to eliminate the
evil doers and emerges as hero. Same license to kill
if he were to use to harm innocent people, he would be
termed as a criminal and even a terrorist.
We too become criminals of a different kind. We commit
wrong against our own self when we feel free and have
freedom of wasting our time and talent on unproductive
things. We conveniently call it our freedom of being
young and have our own rules and convenient notions
such as fun is our first right, young age is for
enjoying as college years don't come again! Completing
school studies is taken as coming out of long term
prison or confinement. Going to college gives wings of
freedom for reckless flight.
Such funny notions encourage youngsters to be
time-eaters or time wasters. Being in company becomes
an addiction. Surfing the net becomes a habit.
Dangerously enough these damaging trends are carried
in work life too.
To satisfy one's spending inclinations, one needs more
money so instead of intellectual growth oriented job,
just to get more money they take up stagnating call
centre type jobs. The self-created spending spree
pushes one even to unethical practices for earning
money. Thankfully it is not all so bad or so sad for
all. There are many youngsters who plan their career
or future course and pursue it. But unknowingly in
this sensible act, they are at times carried away by
the gloss and craze for getting glamorous too or even
going abroad at exorbitant cost. This happens because
they are unable to assess the real worth of what they
choose to pursue.
One must assess not only the cost but also the time
spent as well as the outcome of such choices by
analyzing the ultimate achievement not in terms of
just a course or qualification but also the skill one
acquires and capability for independent performance so
as to get a job or enter a profession which affords
some balance in life. Sadly, even busy parents have
limited knowledge and time to explore the right
options. They term their detachment as giving their
child a freedom of choice. Many even copy what any one
else does. People look around a lot while shopping for
a shoe or a tee-shirt, but in matters of careers, very
few explore and look around for choosing the most
appropriate one.
So let one start first by restraining oneself from the
so called freedom of squandering one's time which is a
part of one's life and let one spend time to think and
explore and understand what would be the right career
choice and right training. Do get some “genuine”
guidance and advice and pursue something which is
matching one's aptitude and ability as well as budget.
Once on a job, one should dedicate oneself to be
committed to grow. This is the least one must do for
oneself in this era of Independent India! Chuck out
the casual approach, bring in sincere thinking and
action and keep on learning more for better life for
self and society. Well, these are a few indispensable
points to ponder and practise. |
