College of Commerce and Economics is one of the most sought after
colleges in Mumbai. It was established by the SVKM (Sri Vile Parle
Kelavani Mandal) trust in 1964. It is affiliated to the University
of Mumbai and offers BCom and BMS courses, as well as vocational
courses in Marketing and Salesmanship, Accounting and Auditing and
Travel and Tourism at the HSC level. The college has a special
Gujarathi quota for admissions.
NM College is known for academic excellence and has consistently
had students securing merit ranks in the HSC as well as the
University examinations. The college is very strict about
academics. There is a high cut off percentage for admission and
good performance in examinations is stressed on. The faculty is
good. The 3 semester system is followed unlike other colleges. The
college is also strict about discipline and university rules such
as the 75% attendance criterion.
However the college students also excel in extra curricular
activities. The annual intercollegiate fest hosted by N M College
called “Umang” is regarded by many as one of the best college
festivals in the city. Besides this fest, there are many clubs and
societies such as the Planning Forum, the Computer Society, the
Music and Dance Society, the English Literary Association,
Gujarathi Sahitya Mandal, Marathi Sahitya Mandal and the Speakers
and Writers Club, etc. which have activities throughout the year. |

The college has air
conditioned classrooms, a well stocked library, good computer
facilities and good canteen (as well as a large number of food
stalls just outside which are patronized by the students of this
college). A student of this college is usually also involved in
preparing for many professional courses like CA, MBA, etc and the
college always supports them in this regard. Ex- students of this
college have formed the NaaM- the NM College Alumni Association
Movement in 1997 and it has its own range of activities.
In general, students have always shown pride in being NM-ites. And
no wonder, as NM College is widely acknowledged as one of the best
commerce colleges in the city. The National Accreditation and
Assessment Council (NAAC) awarded the college the B+ grade after
the latest accreditation. So it is definitely a good choice for
those planning to study Commerce.
