Sun Care for Skin

Inadequate exposure to the sun, apart from causing premature ageing and blotchy skin with pigmentation, can also lead to sunburn which is also known to be a cause of skin cancer. In India, due to higher melanin content, leading to darker shade of skin, the aspiration among many Indians is also to look fairer which can in-a-way be achieved with protected exposure to the skin that will prevent further tanning. In order to protect the skin, an appropriate sunscreen is essential. Modern sunscreens ideally provide high and broad spectrum ultraviolet (UV) protection in UAB, which protects against sunburn, as well as UAV, which prevents tanning.

To achieve best results, it is essential to use the right sunscreen and to use it at least twice a day depending on ones lifestyle and occupation. SPF factor of a sunscreen indicates the length of time your skin can be exposed to sun without burning, for example SPF 20 would indicate 200 minutes of protection. In India, ideally SPF 20 and above is ideal. However, for people exposed to outdoor activities, SPF 30 to 45 is recommended. Sunscreens are available either as gel-based or cream-based. Use product according to skin type, as a thumb rule- gel-based for oily skin and cream-based for dry skin. Repeat the application of sunscreen at regular intervals if outdoors. If you are swimming, re-apply when you get out of the pool.

It also helps, wherever possible, to use an umbrella, a wide rimmed hat or protective long sleeve clothing, along with the sunscreen. Importantly, make sure you stay out of the sun after any skin treatments, such as facials and cleanups, for upto 48 hours as the skin would be sensitive and can get damaged easily.

Here are some Home Skin Care Tips to prevent tanning:

  • Use a mixture of limejuice and glycerine. This is excellent even for freckles and pigmentation spots

  • Use aloevera gel over a sunburn or a tan as it helps to heal the skin

  • Use caladryl if you get skin rash due to sunburn.

  • To lighten a Tan, use a mixture of curd and lime 10 minutes before bathing. This acts as a natural skin bleaching agent.

  • An effective anti-tan mask that you can make at home is to take 1 teaspoon of milk powder, ½ teaspoon of sandalwood powder, ½ teaspoon of lime juice and add a few drops of honey. Make a paste and use this pack twice a week, keeping on for ten minutes.

  • Use of foundation and compact also helps to protect against a tan, however make sure you cleanse your face thoroughly at the end of the day.

  • Exposure to harsh sunlight can cause Crow's Feet i.e. wrinkles around the eyes due to frequent squinting in the sun. These can be prevented by wearing the right type of sunglasses.

It is a well known fact that good skin is the foundation of beauty. Your skin projects your beauty, so look after it well and it will help you look young and glowing.
