Editorial - Smart Career Guidelines to Conquer Uncertainties
 
Days of big careers are not gone but in times of uncertainty, the magic mantra is "quick start" with "continuous growth." More doers than thinkers are needed because the room at the top is crowded, so doers who pool in to company's kitty are real contributors. Of course every well performing team does need a captain ... lieutenants and ... and the soldiers. But the million dollar question is how many captains does a team need? How many planners does a project or business venture require? In reality, the skilled operators are the grass root performers and hence are needed in number. Again the captains are not made overnight. They emerge from well groomed, self-motivated and diligent performers at the grass root operations.

So what does this convey to career aspirants?
Limit your pursuit of mere book-level learning; add a list of skill learning imparted through a simulated hands-on system. Before all this, to begin an aspirant needs to shape himself into a good learner. So core training should begin with "acquiring performing skills" and learning personal effectiveness tools such as time allocation. Next for interaction, one should become a good communicator by mastering basics along with art of presentation. Lastly to grow, one should augment one's capacity for continuing with higher learning. Count on these 5 aspects as your core competence for pursuing your journey safely and on a swift track too.

The great "warning bell" - stop being dazzled and carried away by glamour but instead start with performing rather than floating in clouds of fancy and fascination. Remember, all careers however glamorous they appear in reality require performance which is tougher in glamorous careers where it is an uphill task to please everybody in every way. So start out with multidirectional growth of "self" and become a multi-skilled doer in several areas of any field. Remember, it is the age of “Jack of all and Master of some” that helps to reach a covetous position in career. To grow beyond that one can further specialize and still remain knowledgeable in major aspects.
