Basic skills for careers

Whichever field one chooses, the basic and essential skills are the same. This is because every business or profession has 3 common elements in its operation.

  • First and foremost is people - so people skills is a prime need.

  • Second, but most important aspect is transactions and related records.

  • Last but not the least is field specific knowledge.

  • Additional strengths are through market idea, future trends, new developments, government policy and related legal compliances. Adding to these, problem solving and innovation are icing on the cake.

All these business or profession related elements are to be handled and taken care of by a single person to start with and when organisation grows big enough each element is split into smaller functions with a person taking care of a particular function. Later it may grow into separate department as and when activities grow in size. Observe any professional activity or business or service company or even a production house; a doctor, an engineer, an architect having their professional practice; a shop, a food outlet, a gym, a parlour or even a mall or a cinema theatre or a multiplex, you will find these 3 distinct elements.

For a fresher, just qualifying academically for any profession or business stream will give you only subject specific knowledge but will not include systematic training in other two elements viz people skills and administrative or business operational skills nor any record keeping idea. This poses immediate problems for a fresh graduate when joining a job, which can be overcome by regular exposure through day to day work. To make employment opportunity readily available for grabs or rather for preferential selection in the interview, one must get practical training in understanding people and effective communication as well as art of presentation so that you can communicate effectively to get the desired outcome. Basic training in these topics goes a long way. Besides, you should be trained in general smart skills of time organising, prioritizing, planning, team work, leadership and training skills to grow higher. You should also sharpen your personal qualities.

To bridge the gap of performance techniques, simulated workshops in performance and related essential skills will not only eliminate scope of errors during your first experience in a job, but also accelerate your growth and promotion. Ideally companies should organise such basic essential skills workshops. Since persons keen on professional practice as well as still to be employed youngsters can be trained in such skills ins advance. Even students can benefit from such advance training and get opportunity to work in spare time.
